Throw a Red White & Blue Memorial Day Picnic to Remember With These Amazing Ideas
Memorial Day is all about remembering those who have served our country. Make sure everyone remembers how great your party was by trying some of these amazing recipes, crafts, games, and more! Your red, white and blue Memorial Day party begins here!
Lawn Stars
Stars are all over the American flag, but you can add them to your lawn too! With spray paint that's okay to use on grass (like what sports fields use), you can grab a star-shaped stencil and mimic this look. Do some along the walkway up to your home or in a hopscotch pattern in your back yard. If you have military friends or family, you can even make a walk of fame by stenciling their names onto your lawn!
Red, White, and Blue Refreshments
Keep everyone thirsty for more fun, but not for more drinks with these red, white, and blue beverages. The trick here is not to jiggle them once they're poured or all of the colors will meld into an unpatriotic purple. While you could spin it as being a "purple heart" treat, you'll probably want to achieve the original look. Take a trip to your local party store to get matching straws and pom poms and either special order milk bottles or use something you have on hand. Float some patriotic red white and blue candy in there for an added touch.
DIY Flag Decorations
Get the medal of honor for your ability to go all out in Memorial Day décor. This tutorial is fantastic because it'll take you through a number of craft ideas from mason jar flags to front door ideas. Instead of hanging your traditional decorations, maybe try something new this Memorial Day. Since the 4th of July is right around the corner, you'll get a lot of use out of the red, white, and blue stuff you make.
American Flag Dip
America the Beautiful was talking about the land, but this American flag taco salad is also something that should be included. With its beautiful design, it's a pretty appetizer to add to your Memorial Day menu. It's also super delicious with layers of tomato, cheese, corn chips, and sour cream. If you love 7-layer dip, try making that but in flag-form. Then give all your guests the freedom to snack at will.
United Utensils
You can't have a successful Memorial Day picnic without putting out something to eat all the good food with! These red, white, and blue silverware packs are perfect because they provide function AND fashion. Wrap them in bandanas, or alternating red, white, and blue napkins. Tie them with twine for a rustic look or give them a crisp white ribbon to make them look spiffy. Set them at individual place settings or put them in a bucket or jar by the food. We like to hide a piece of wrapped candy like Jolly Ranchers in each one, but that's just how we roll.
Star Sticks
Watermelon is still a little ways away from being ripe for the season, but you should still be able to find it in grocery stores near you. Use its vibrant reddish/pink center to your advantage by skewering it with blueberries. You can cut the watermelon into strips and then use a star-shaped cookie cutter to achieve this look. Keep it simple by using a melon baller and skewering those pieces if you prefer. Add even more patriotism to this healthy snack by sticking a few marshmallows into these sticks.
Sparkler Cupcakes
Sparklers are a fun Memorial Day and 4th of July pyrotechnic tool. Imagine how stunning it would be to bring out a platter of cupcakes bedazzled with lit sparklers as the grand finalé to your Memorial Day picnic. Martha Stewart is the queen of crafting and homemaking, and this tutorial will show you how to recreate this fun patriotic dessert.
Patriotic Pasta
Ever make your own pasta? It's not a typical picnic food, but it is something that you can serve to your family if you're not planning on feeding a crowd. You'll need a spaghetti maker for this, but if you don't have one, you could just as easily make ravioli or lasagna noodles yourself with a rolling pin. This isn't the quickest menu item to make, but it's super original and possesses all of the American pride that we love to celebrate on Memorial Day.
Daring Deviled Eggs
Military members who have served are some of the bravest people around. Be bold and daring yourself by trying these deviled eggs. Don't be fooled, this is a little trickier than dying Easter eggs. You'll need to hard boil them, take off the shells, scoop out the yolks, and then dye each half in red and blue food coloring. The good news is that some can be left white, so that's less work for you!
Celebratory Centerpieces and Candle Holders
Get more for your time by watching this tutorial where you'll learn how to make patriotic centerpieces and candle holders. Prepare yourself for a lot of sparkle, red, white, blue, and star-shaped paraphernalia. You can gather your kids or friends to help you make these decorations or do it yourself a couple weeks before the big event. Get more life out of these decorations by using them for July 4th festivities too.
Parade Popcorn
Make this popcorn if you're heading to a parade and need something to snack on. Or, whip up a batch to use in an easy and tasty goodie bag for picnic guests. You'll pop corn as usual and then top it with sweet icing and red, white, and blue sprinkles. Going to fireworks? Mix some of this up right before so it's still warm as you watch the show light up the sky.
Red, White, and Blue Sangria
Throwing an adult-dominated Memorial Day party? Don't let your guests get thirsty. This red, white, and blue sangria is fruity, sweet, and super refreshing. You can make this the night before (it's better that way because it lets the flavors meld) and keep it in the refrigerator until it's ready to be served. Modify the fruits to your liking, but keep with the patriotic color scheme!
National Nail Art
We've shown you how to cook and decorate. Now, we'll show you how to look the part for Memorial Day too. These fun nail designs will show your American pride and elevate your party look. You could set up a station at your Memorial Day party and have people do each others' nails. Or, just do your own the night before so they're looking star-spangled and spectacular on the day of the party.
American Pride Pizza
Ever made pizza on the grill? If you're going to be cooking up ‘dogs and burgers, try throwing a pizza on the grill. It takes on a charred flavor from the grill and deepens the flavor of the toppings. This person used beets, tomatoes, and feta cheese. You can make a sweet dessert pizza with U.S.A. colors or follow these directions word for word. This is a great appetizer idea since these pizzas cook very quickly on the grill and can be cut into squares of slivers to be shared.
